My “Puertorriqueñidad"

Being Puerto Rican can be a million of different things depending on whom you ask. There are people all over the world who haven’t even touched Puerto Rico and have bigger a national pride than people who haves lived on the island for years. For me being puertorican is all about our wonderful culture, it’s all about waking up a Saturday or Sunday to call your friends and family so we can go to the beach and eat alcapurrias, bacalaitos and a lot of wonderful fatty food.

Also about seeing our colorful flag anywhere in the world and have your heart swell up immediately.  As puertoricans we are very proud people and a lot of things from one another may annoys us, but as soon as there’s a big catastrophe like a hurricane there’s no need to ask for help because we are a big family and everyone is willing to share. As puertoricans we take even the littlest opportunity to make a big party, prepare a big feast and make an “alboroto”.  There’s a big part of the identity in our music, most of us love to dance salsa and after a few medallas even some reggaeton. We love our language and to use colorful words and some lingo that nobody else in the world would be able to understand here having a good time is a “vacilón”, a person having a bad time is “badstripiando”, and there’s a thousand different ways of naming a person who you don’t know.
